Basil has the particularity of offering a large number of different varieties. The species and the place of cultivation modify the composition of the essential oil from the plant. On the look side, the basil has shades of green or purple whose color tones evolve according to the varieties. It is also recognized by its small white to pale pink flowers.
Although it is native to Asia, basil is cultivated today very well in Southern Europe. The plant thrives in August, allowing its distillation. About 10 kg of plants are needed to obtain 10 ml of essential oil.
